Nutritional Therapy in Dentistry

Nutrition is a significant modifiable factor that impacts the host’s immune response and the integrity of the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. There is is renewed interest from the scientific community about the role of nutrition and infectious diseases. There is also evidence that nutritional deficiencies may play a role in the incidence and severity of periodontal disease. Nutritional supplementation has been suggested as a possible influencing factor on periodontal status and wound healing. Several studies have reported various degrees of association between nutritional elements/supplements and periodontal status, and others have reported some positive influences of nutritional supplementation on periodontitis – systemic disease interactions.
